The show ran on NBC from September 16, 1984 to September 7, 1986 and again in first-run syndication from September 26, 1986 to May 27, 1988. Punkey Brewster was a 1980's American situation comedy that centered on a warm, funny and bright young girl named Penelope "Punky" Brewster (Soleil Moon Frye) who was abandoned by her parents in a Chicago Supermarket along with her faithful dog, Brandon. She discovers and moves in a vacant apartment in a local building and quickly became friends with Cherie johnson (Cherie Johnson), a young girl living in that same building with her grandmother Betty Johnson (Susie Garrett). When building manager/photographer Henry Warnimont (George Gaynes) learns about her and her story, he temporarily takes her into his home. And no sooner did the 7 year old won the heart of the grouchy old widower and turned his world around. Punky Brewster, although considered a family comedy, tackled several serious issues during its 4 season run including kidnapping, runaways and drugs - where the series is known for launching the popular "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign that became popular during the 80's.
